Your disability must be one that prevents you from work or "substantial gainful activity" for a period of at least 12 months. The Social Security regulations contain a list of conditions that are recognized as causing significant impairment. There are other conditions that are less disabling, but a combination of these conditions can be qualifying for benefits. Another list contains illnesses such as terminal cancer, whose cases are expedited.

Factors considered in determining whether you are disabled and eligible include:
- Whether you are currently working
- Whether the impairment is included on a list of certain disabling impairments
- Whether the medical condition is severe enough to render you disabled
- Whether you can do work you did before
- What other types of work you may be able to do
Your Medical Records
The most important thing you can do to document your case for benefits is to keep a complete record of your treatments, doctor and hospital visits and diagnoses, and opinion letters establishing your condition and disability.
Again, do not be discouraged. Multiple appeals may be necessary, but with persistence your chances may be good for obtaining the support you need.
